Ukemi:  Left sided rolls only, to keep from landing on my seriously jammed left pinky toe.

Aikido Thursday Night - 10/28/10

Aikidoka:  Tim, and Sal.

Techniques:

We worked on some of the techniques in Koryu Dai Ni.  They're interesting techniques that seem to concentrate on off-balances at 45 degrees to uke's feet.

Aftermath: I'd stubbed my toe severely before driving to the dojo and it was fairly painful by the end of the evening.

Artfire: Featured Shop: Jewelry by Andrea

Andrea has some neat jewelry in her shop.  Some of her items have free shipping and she's having a 20% off sale if you use the code SURPRISESALE20 on checkout.  Below are just a few of her items

In the shop

I managed to get some time in the shop this weekend.  3 or so hours on Saturday and 5 or so on Sunday.

Most of Saturday was spent working on a console for a cousin.  The major body is ready to go, now it's time to work on trimming the edges that need it with solid oak.  At the end of the weekend, 1/4 of the body needing trim is done.  I've got 3/4 more to do and trim out the tops and the shelves.  I've prepped the oak stock.  I need to run some of it through the planer to reduce the sanding time.

I also managed to do some pen turning.  I've got a commission for 6 pens on artfire and I finally got started on them.  Unfortunately, I had more failures than successes in that department.

I had recently ordered 8 blanks of the needed wood, so I cut and drilled all of them.  Given my past track record, 20% to 30% of blanks I start with will not end up as completed pens, so I need to have extras ready.  Well, right off the bat, I'd cut two of the blanks too short, so they were useless.  Then two of the blanks blew out when I tried to square the ends on the drill press.  So, of the 8 I started with, I was down to 4 possible pens.

I then went looking through the rest of my blanks and discovered 2 more of the right wood.  I was at 6 possible pens, just the right number.  I got those prepped and started turning. I turned one of them too thin and so it blew out on the lathe.

At this point, I may get 5 pens out of what I have on hand.  I need to order more wood.  The place I ordered from for my latest batch is currently out.  I ordered 10 blanks and they only sent (and charged me for ) 8.  So, I have to find a new supplier.

Straight No Chaser in Houston October 17, 2010

K and I saw "Straight No Chaser" this past weekend when they were in Houston.  It was the first time we've seen them live and it was a fabulous concert.  Ten friends from Indiana singing their own arrangements of a variety of songs.

Here's their rendition of "Chicken Fried" by the Zac Brown Band.

Artfire: Featured Shop: Art by Sunfire

This week's featured shop is Art by Sunfire.  She does a bunch of interesting work with her hands.  Here are just a few samples:

Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 10/16/10

Aikidoka:  Tim, Trey, and Dan

Ukemi:  Regular warmup before we got started.  I spent the regular time watching over Dan

The Walk: twice

Releases: with Dan.

Techniques:

Dan got our undivided attention.  He got some work on the Walk with Tim while Trey and I tenderized each other a bit.  Trey decided we needed to throw each other with the Garumas from Owaza Ju Pon.

We went through the 3 Garumas and nailed them on the first attempts.  We then attempted Kata Otoshi, which is a timing nightmare.  We managed that on the second try each, which is pretty damn impressive.  We told Tim we were going home at that point, as we felt we'd achieved perfection for the day.

We reconsidered.

We spent the rest of the afternoon with Dan working on Shomen-ate, Aigamae-ate and Gyaku gamae-ate.  He did amazingly well and had quite a bit of improvement.  Next time we'll probably add in the left side just to mess things up.

Aftermath: Lots of falls, a bit sore.

Aikido Friday Night - 10/15/10

Aikidoka:  Tim, Trey, Troy, Brad, Sal, and Dan  We also had a potential new student visiting around halfway through the class.  A teenager, half as old as the youngest member of the dojo.

I spent a good portion of the evening with Tim going through what we do in a regular class for the potential new student.  I took some big falls as demonstration during that time.  Tim thinks there's a good chance he'll be joining us.  He'll be using it as P.E. credit for school.

Ukemi:  Light warmup.  I spent the regular time watching over Dan

The Walk: twice

Releases: with Dan.

Techniques:

I warmed up Dan with some "punch the dummy" work.  After a few reps, he had that down. We moved on to Shomen-ate.  He managed to get that done fairly well.

Aftermath: Lots of falls, a bit sore.

Lunching out: Burger House

What I had:

Lunch special: 1/3 lb. burger, fries and a drink.  I added bacon and grilled onions to the burger at a little exrta cost.

What it cost:

$8, I think.

Reactions

The burger was nice, the bun was a decent imitation of Fuddrucker's.  The fixing bar was decent.  The fries were nothing to write home about: crinkle-cut, not very crispy.  At least they didn't taste too frozen, but they did have a slight seafood flavor.

My office has moved to a new location and this joint is fairly close, so I might be going back fairly often.

Aikido Thursday Night - 10/14/10

Aikidoka:  Tim, Troy

Techniques:

We spent some time working on the defensive Jo techniques.  Apparently there are 5 of them.

1. Gyaku

2. Shomen-ate
3. Lo-otoshi
4. Row boat
5. Hi-otoshi

I'm certain that these are not the actual names of the techniques.  I'll have to find them at some point.

I got the general idea, and was able to execute the techniques, but was at about 60 or 70 percent of where I'd like to be on consistency.  There was a wide variability of how I managed the initial off-balance and managed gake.  This was noticeable most on Shomen-ate where I tended to bend my elbow too much.  It was also noticeable on "hi otoshi" where, if I mucked up the initial off-balance, I would not be able to get a hold of the jo with my right hand to complete the technique.

We then did a little work with Troy as uke for Aigamae-ate at 3 step distance.  It went well.

Aftermath: None of note.

Ukemi:  Light warmup.  I spent the regular time watching over Dan

Releases: with Dan.  Lots of rust after over a month away

Techniques:

I warmed up Dan with some "punch the dummy" work.  After a few reps, he had that down. We moved on to Shomen-ate.  We had to work on the initial off-balance for a while.  His hand work was throwing me off.

I then worked with Troy on Oshi-taoshi and Ude-gaeshi and did pretty well.  We spent most of the time at one-step distance to make things easier.

I also work with Sal some on Shomen-ate.  I wanted to give him a different uke, and I'm about as different as they come.  He did pretty well

Aftermath: None of note.

Aikido Thursday Night - 10/7/10

Aikidoka:  Tim, Troy

Techniques:

We spent some time working on the kneeling portion of Koryu Dai San.  Troy got his first experience as uke for the techniques and there was a little bit to clean up on his end.  There was a fair amount on my end to clean up, as well.  I was having a bit of a time with him on the arm bar for Oshi Taoshi.  Tory is more flexible than Trey is and does not lock up as easily.

After that, we did some more work on Oshi Taoshi with me as uke.  Spent some more time on the footwork and the armbar.

Aftermath: None of note.

Artfire: Featured Shop: RLS Design

Rachel has both jewelry and photographic prints available in her art fire shop.  Here are just a couple of examples:

Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 10/02/10

Aikidoka:  Tim, Trey, Troy, and Dan

Ukemi:  no warmup.  I didnt get there in time and watched over Dan's warm-ups

The Walk: twice

Releases: with Dan.  Lots of rust after over a month away

Techniques:

I warmed up Dan with some "punch the dummy" work.  After a few reps, he had that down. We moved on to Shomen-ate.  He eventually started nailing me with it.  We had to work through some off-balance issues, but it went really well.

I then worked with Troy on Oshi-taoshi and Ude-gaeshi and he both sides down after a short while.  We also worked on introducing the 3-step distance for techniques that we use for Sankyu grades and above.  He did well with that, too.

At the end, I was able to work on some jo takeaway techniques.  I don't know where they come from, probably San Kata.  I was pleased with how I did on them.

Aftermath: None of note.

Aikido Thursday Night - 9/30/10

Aikidoka:  Tim

Techniques:

We did some work on Higashi's techniques on unarmed defense against bokken.  We played with the five techniques.  We spent a lot of time playing with the fifth technique which is an aigamae-ate sword take away.  The off-balances and kake were tough to figure out and optimize.  Higashi's photos seemed to show items that were not comfortable for toir and potentially risky.  We'll do some more work on them in future sessions.

Aftermath: None of note.
