Lunching out: Big Bens

Big Ben's has taken over a spot in Webster that has not had a lot of luck.  It's not nearly as deadly to a restaurant as the old Gallagher's Steak House location, but it's not a great spot.  Big Ben's has an English pub-like menu and a large number of TV screens throughout.

When I got there about noon on Friday, there were very few customers.

I tried the Shepherd's Pie witha glass of iced tea.  The SP was pretty good, even though I think they used instant potatoes.  It was very mild flavor-wise, but piping hot temperature-wise.  I think my total tab was about $12.  I'd be willing to go back to sample more items.  Below is my meal:

Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 1/29/11

Aikido players:  Tim, Trey, Brad, Melvin and Gayle.

Ukemi:  Full ukemi, no big falls.

The Walk: Not today

Releases: Worked with Trey on our releases.  It'd been a while since we'd worked together on them, so we spent some time dissecting issues.

Techniques:

Trey and I worked on Koryu Dai San kneeling techniques for a while, mainly with Trey serving as tori.  I did get a couple of reps while trying to explain my approach to some of them and while attempting to figure out some minor details.

Tim worked with Melvin and Gayle on the walk during this time.

Brad showed up about 3 hours in and Trey and I worked with him on 6-10 of Ju Nana Hon Kata.  We then had him run through all 10 of the techniques.  He's making progress, but we need to boost his confidence that he *is* making progress.

Aftermath:

5 hours of aikido.  Ibuprofen was a definite necessity to ease the pain a bit.

Techniques:

We spent most of the evening working Troy over on 11 and 12 of Ju Nana Hon Kata (Kote-hineri, Kote-gaeshi)Trey and I spent the evening working on 11-14 of Ju Nana Hon Kata.

Occasionally, Tim would take me off to the side and we work a little on some more techniques from Yon Kata.  Gonna need some more time to play with that before I get a feel for what we're trying to do.

Aikido Thursday Night - 1/27/11

Aikido players:  Tim, Trey and Troy.


Techniques:

Troy worked with me on the 14 variations of the releases found in Koryu Dai Yon No Kata.  I attempted to run through this kata a little more dynamically, as Tim requested.  I did ok.

Trey and Troy worked on Trey's Owaza Ju Pon set.  He's doing them both left and right sided - we normally only ask for right side in demonstrations.  It's coming along fine for him.

We then did some work with Troy on his next set of techniques.  We only managed to get through Kote Hineri and Kote Gaeshi.  I think he made of a breakthrough on Kote Gaeshi.  We'll see tonight.

Artfire shop of the week - Red Rose Confections

Red Rose Confections is a member of a guild I've just joined on Artfire  - On Fire for Handmade.  Heather was in a corporate position in the cake and confections industry when the company turned in a different direction.  She decided to get back to her love for cakes and candies and start making them by hand, again.

She doesn't sell her cakes online, but her candies are a different story.  She makes chocolate bark with a variety of add-ins among other confections.  Her hand-poured white chocolate candy is often embellished with glitter or a special something to add an amazing touch to her items.

Aikido Friday Night - 1/21/11

Techniques:

Trey and I spent the evening working on 11-14 of Ju Nana Hon Kata for him. Kote-gaeshi was the most fickle for the evening.  I took one hard fall and was then reluctant to take further falls.  I need to have him throw me with big falls in warm-up so he gets used to what's going on.

The other techniques went pretty well.  We did some tweaking of his armbar for Tenkai Kote-Hineri that improved it quite a bit.

We also did some more playing with Koryu Dai Yon No Kata.

Aikido Thursday Night - 1/20/11

Aikido players:  Tim and Troy.


Techniques:

Troy worked with me on the 14 variations of the releases found in Koryu Dai Yon No Kata.  We played with what it took to get uke to take a half step recovery in order for the next step to be the proper one for the throw.  It appears the tori really needs to come up and in in order for uke to step with the desired foot in order to get the throw off of his fourth toe.

That changed for the 7th technique of the kata.  For that one tori needs to off-balance uke forward on the first and second off-balances in order to get around uke's arm for the throw.

We then did some work with Troy on Tenkai Kote-Hineri.  He'd not done much work on it so far.  He picked it up pretty well.

Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 1/15/11

Aikido players:  Tim, Trey, Troy, Brad, and Dan.  The potential new couple of students did not show up.


Ukemi:  Partial ukemi, no big falls.  A little sore/tired from the falls last night.  Watched over Dan.  Trey had another suggestion.


The Walk: Twice, as usual. 

Releases: Watched the guys work and threw in some coments from time to time.  Also wkred with Dan on the last 4, but he was having real troubles today.


Techniques:

I spent some time working with Troy on Shihonage, he's doing pretty well on it.  Tooks some garuma falls for Trey as a teaching tool for Dan.


At the end I did some work on the standing portion of Koryu Dai San.  I've got to remember these techniques and their order.  I was pretty much brain dead at the end of this.


Aftermath: Genereal overall aches after a lot of falls for the weekend.

Ukemi:  Full ukemi, no big falls.  Watched over Dan.  He's keeping up the progress he made last week.

The Walk: Twice, as usual. 

Releases: Worked with Dan and Sal


Techniques:

I spent the evening working with Sal and Dan on Shomen-ate.  We spent a lot of time on the right side but finally met my designated goal and got some left side work done, too.  They managed to meet my goal for the left side with just a minute or so left in our time.  Cool.

Also took a Kotegaeshi fall or two from Trey when he was showing stuff on the technique to Troy.

Aftermath: 30 minutes+ of me taking shomen-ate falls.

Aikido Thursday Night - 1/13/11

Aikido players:  Tim, Trey, and Troy.


Techniques:

Trey and I did some work on some of the kneeling Koryu Dai San techniques, 1, 2 and 3.

We then did some work with Troy on Kotegaeshi.  We worked on the entry, time and the throw.  He managed to do the throw at slow speeds, which is pretty good for a first night of working on it.

Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 01/08/11

Aikidoka:  Tim, Trey, Troy, Brad, and Dan.We also had to visitors watching practice.  There is a good chance they will join us next week.

Ukemi:  Full ukemi, no big falls.  Watched over Dan.  Troy had a good suggestion for him that seemed to help quite a bit.  I hope it continues next week.

The Walk: Twice, as usual. 

Releases: Worked on some of Ki Harry with Troy and did the usual 1-8 on both sides.


Techniques:

I spent the afternoon working with Dan on 1 and 2 of Ju Nana Hon Kata.  He made some progress today.  He was able to quickly go from right sdie 1 to left side 1 to right side 2 to left side 2 and back again.

Tim had Trey and I work on the standing techniques from Koryu Dai San No Kata to show those techniques to the potential new students.  We also did some work on the kneeling techniques.  Rusty, rusty, rusty.

Aftermath: This ended up being almost a three hour session.

Movies of 2010

I only saw 15 movies in 2010, according to my blog posts.  Of those, only 8 were released during the year.  So, it's going to be simple to rank the movies in the order I liked them.

Iron Man 2, Prince of Persia, Burlesque, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, The King's Speech, Tron: Legacy, True Grit, Tangled

At the movies: Tangled

Tangled: 4

The Disney take on the story of Rapunzel was quite fun and engaging.  The animation was nice and the songs were pretty good.  The evil "stepmother" makes another appearance in a Disney movie.

At the Movies: True Grit

True Grit: 3

Jeff Bridges did a masterful job with his role as Rooster Cogburn. Matt Damon did a passable job as

LaBoeuf.  Hailee Steinfeld did a good job as Mattie Ross.  The town of Granger, Texas did an awesome job playing the role of Fort Smith, Arkansas.

 

 

The cinematography was great and the story kept me involved.

At the Movies: Tron : Legacy

Tron : 3

A decent sequel to the original Tron.  Not outstanding cinema, but ok.  Bridges did a good job as his actual age self.  the CG younger Jeff Bridges reminded me a lot of Lord Farquahr from Shrek.  It was disconcerting.

Seeing the old graphics redone to modern standards was amazing, but I think the story line has played out.  I don't think I'll see a third one, should one be made.

Aikido Thursday Night 1/6/11

Aikidoka:  Tim, Trey, and Troy.


Techniques:

Troy did a sample demo for his third brown belt. 

After doing the sample, we surprised him and told him it was his real demo.  He did very, very well!

Aftermath: None of note.
