Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 11/1/14

Aikido players:

Ukemi:

Got a double set in tonight

The Walk:

Twice

Releases:

Worked with Marvin on his.  Did a set myself and was not impressed.

Techniques:

Worked with Marvin on Shomen-ate

After kyu grade session was done, Trey and I worked on the knife stuff from Koryu Dai San.  Spent about an hour and 15 minutes on the first 6 techniques.  Made some progress, found the off-balances.

The kote gaeshi from that section is really fun.  Uke's reaction to the main off-balance and the recovery therefrom turns into the air fall very, very quickly.  As uke starts rotating his center to catch up to his hand, he has to make the decision to take the fall at that instant.  Trey and I each took that fall once.  Too fast to do it many more times at the  point in a session.

We did some grip change drilling: Gaeshi to Hineri and back again.

We ran through most of the Ki Harry chains.  Showed the guys the set that involved 15, 14, 17 and 16.

Techniques:

Trey suggested we do "monkey-in-the-middle".  Randori, in other words.  It went fairly well.  Everyone got a chance in the middle, even Tim.  When Tim was in the middle, he lost one of his tabi socks.  As I was attacking him, I picked up the sock and shook it at him.


We then had Dan work on 11-14

Aftermath:

Trey was showing some pinning stuff at the end, with me as uke.  I attempted to get out of a pin and when Trey reapplied pressure, my hip complained.  Loudly.  But, thankfully, just temporarily.

Volleyball, 0-3

We had our first match of the new season this week.  The season started last week, but we had a bye.  We played a team new to the league and got stomped.  They have 3 good hitters and manhandled us.

I tried to spike during warm-up and my right hip complained.  It's been aching, or needing to be popped for a couple of weeks.  Maybe this will help.

FenCon con report- weekend update

Took a trip last weekend up to Addison for FenCon

Friday:

Up at 4:45 a.m. to get on the road.
On the road, and equipped by Shipley's by 5:30 a.m.
Got in to town and stopped by the DoubleTree for the Dallas Pen Show.  Wandered around that with Rhonda Eudaly.
Arrived at FenCon and started to help Jimmy with the Art Show.
Dinner at a Mexican joint a little further North.

Saturday:

Breakfast at Kuby's, near the SMU campus.
Attempted to find a geocache, but had no luck.
Back to the con for more work on the Art Show
A&M game, watched the first half
Art Auction - pizza from Papa John's
Did a cursory tour of the parties: got grabbed by KC in 2016 and asked to run or advise their Art Show

Sunday:

Breakfast at Pete's Cafe
Back to the Art Show to help check out and tear down.
Drive back home, kept the speed around 85 for most of the trip and was not the fastest vehicle around.

Volleyball, 1-2

We played "Deep Corners" this week and won all only the last game.  We got fairly manhandled on the first two games, but we handled them easily on the third.

Weird.

That should be the last game of the season.  There is another week of regular season, but we've played all of our matches.  We did not make the playoffs.

Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 9/20/14

Just watched over the other folks, except they wanted to see some wrong-leg falls, so I gave them a bit of a demo.  They then took up the gauntlet and took some rolls

Twice, as usual.Plus, I was asked to demonstrate how I do the 2nd stone fo the Walk.  Dan was interested in seeing my weight shift on the side-to-side motion.

Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 8/30/14

Techniques:

Trey got on a wild hare and used me as uke for off-balances with tori using no hands.  Uke just grabs onto tori's gi and tori then creates off-balances and throws.  Trey managed to get a bog fall out of me at one point.

We then split up and worked with the kyu grades and had them work amongst themselves on the same concept.  Some were getting it, some were trying too hard.

We then split up the kyu grades and had them work on their upcoming techniques keeping in mind the working with center emphasized at the beginning of class.
