5 day North East trip

My wife and I took a 5 day trip to the Northeast part of the U. S. over the last weekend in April.  We started in Cleveland so that I could see Roger Zelazny's home town and grab some pictures thereof.  We took off on Wednesday and landed in the early afternoon.  It wasn't early enough for us to grab a meal at one of Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" spots.  Sterle's Slovenian had closed about an hour before we got there.  So, we went on to Euclid and found the high school, the public library and Roger's boyhood home.

From Euclid, we drove on to Erie, Pa. where we ate at Joe Root's Grill.  Eire looks to be a summer tourist town, similar to Galveston, Tx.

Our goals for Thursday were to see Niagara Falls and get to Syracuse, N. Y.

We left the La Quinta after dining on their hot breakfast.  We headed up the coast.  K. noted that there was a Frank Lloyd Wright house along the way to the falls.  We found the house in Derby, N.Y. and pulled in.  Unfortunately, the Graycliff Estate is still in the process of renovation, so we could take no pictures.  We also did not schedule a tour, so we couldn't go see the current state of affairs.  From the visitor's house it looked neat.  Onward to the Falls.

We pulled into Niagara and found the Falls without any issue.  We did some walking about around the area and took some pictures.  A number of things are still closed for the season: Maid of the Mist, lower viewing area, restaurant, but enough was open for our purposes.

From the Falls, we took off to Fort Niagara.  It's a neat place and has been around in some form for about 350 years.

From Fort Niagara, we headed out to Syracuse.  The route to Syracuse amazed me.  There were tons and tons of vineyards along the way.  No green leaves yet, but there must be a ton of wine that comes out of this region.  We went through Rochester, on the way and then caught Hwy 104 and 370 on to the city.  In Syracuse, we ate at "The Distillery" which turned out to be a pretty worthless place to eat.

Friday morning, we woke up at the Inn at the Fairgrounds with a goal of making it to Brattleboro, Vt. by the end of the day.  We hopped on 20 and drove through a bunch of small towns.  We passed through one that I regret not stopping in: Manlius.  Manlius is the home to the Stickley furniture company.  They are the folks who made a lot of furniture of the style that Frank Lloyd Wright used.

We continued on to Albany, where we just happened to drive by the State Archives Library.  K. was excited about that.  From Albany, we drove to Williamstown, Ma.

From there it was a short drive up 100 into Vermont and drove up to catch 9 into Brattleboro.

Brattleboro is where we would stay the night, but it was too early to stay at the hotel.  So, on up 91 we went.  It is weird traveling in a state where they don't number the exits from the highway based on the mile marker.  I'm used to Texas, where exit 23 on Hwy 45 is 23 miles from Galveston where the road starts.  It's an easy way to guess how long it will take you to get to the exit.  In Vermont, exit 9 might be 12 miles from exit 8.

One nice thing about the roads in New York and Vermont is that there are no billboards.  It has a downside, however.  Trying to find  the Harpoon Brewery or Mitch's Sugar Shack (where we picked up 1/2 gallon of Maple Syrup) is not easy.  You have to spot little brown signs  and try to figure out what they mean.  Does that sign mean that Mitch's is 3 miles to the right?  Or does it mean that Mitch's will be on the right in 3 miles?

I'm not certain we got a firm grasp on the answer.

After Mitch's, we saw a sign for the Harpoon Brewery and figured we'd go take a look.  We were pleasantly surprised that they had a restaurant there.  We were hungry.  We ended up with the best meal of our trip at their restaurant.  I recommend it.

From there we went on to Brattleboro for the night at the Quality Inn.  On Saturday morning, our goal was to make it to Manchester N. H. by the end of the day in order to fly back home on Sunday.  The weather did not agree with our plans as it was SNOWING when we woke up!  Thankfully, it was not sticking in our area, so we felt it was safe to continue our drive.  We wanted to spend some time in Maine just wandering around.

Shortly after we got into the state we stopped into their Visitor's Center.  It was quite nice and had a huge selection of brochures.  From this point, we drove up highway 1 into Kennebunkport, just to see the town we've heard mentioned so often.  On the way back down, we stopped in Kittery to check out the Kittery Trading Post.  It has an amazing selection of outdoor gear and was quite busy.

From Kittery, it was on to Manchester, N. H. for the night at the Fairfield Inn.  We ate at the Red Arrow Diner that was on an episode of Triple D.  I had Chicken Tenders Parmigiana with Lemon Meringue Pie for dessert.  K. had Meat Loaf with Chocolate Cake for dessert.  She ate on the slice of cake for the rest of the week.  It was huge.

Sunday had us up at a pleasant time to pack and get ready for the flight home.  We turned the car in, passed through security and made it back to Houston.

Artfire - Featured Shop -Tatsu Shop

I just ran across this shop, Tatsu,  on artfire today.  (I'm going to take a guess and use the masculine pronoun when referrring to the shop owner.)  He's got a number of nice wildlife pictures as well as art from manga he has created, "Ronin Yoshino".  There are also some dragon prints, as well as some other fantastical asian creature.

Here are just a few selections:

Artfire - item of the week in my shop - Padauk bottle stopper

The item of the week in my artfire shop is this Padauk Burl Bottle Stopper.  A bottle stopper turned out of padauk and matched with a chrome base. It will add an elegant touch to your open bottle of vino while keeping the flavor at its best.

Volleyball, 3-0

I subbed on the co-ed recreational team last night.  We won all three games without too much effort.  The first game we were up 11-0, but our opponents staged a mighty comeback.  We should not have let them do that.

Volleyball, 0-3

We played 3 close games.  I think we had a lead at some point in all of them.  We then let them come back to win.  We played well, and I'm getting a little more comfortable with hitting from behind the 10-foot line.

Weekend update

Friday:

Aikido

Saturday:

Blueberry muffins
Into town to pick up a replacement battery for one of my UPSs
Stopped at Woodcraft for some supplies
AikidoDinner at Durango's with K. and K.

Sunday:

Off to San Marcos for my cousin Eric's wedding
Chilled at the hotel for a bit
Off to the wedding
Found out Osama bin Laded had been killed

Monday

Drove back from San Marco - just a little under 3 hours
Napped
Did some work from home

Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 04/30/11

Aikido players:  Tim, Brad, and Dan..

Ukemi:

Set of 12 falls.I still need to find some time to re-work my left-side big falls.

The Walk:

Twice, per usual.

Releases:

With Brad.  We spent the usual amount of time on the releases.  He picked up on the changes necessary to deal with my size a bit quicker than usual.

Techniques:

We spent most of the evening on 6-10 of Ju Nana Hon Kata with Brad as tori.  But, we got a fair amount of time in with 1-3 of Ju Nana Hon Kata with Dan as tori, too.

Brad still needs to relax on the techniques, he's still to stuff and attempting to use too much muscle.

Dan's doing pretty well on the techniques we've introduced him to.

Aftermath:

On one of my warm-up rolls, I noticed a little something in my left hip.  It appears, several days down the road, to have been a tweak of my bike fall bruise of several months ago.

Aikido Friday Night - 04/30/11

Aikido players:  Tim, Troy, and Sal.

Ukemi:

Set of 12 falls.I still need to find some time to re-work my left-side big falls.

The Walk:

Not tonight

Releases:

Not tonight

Techniques:

We spent most of the evening on 6-10 of Ju Nana Hon Kata with Sal and Troy as tori. Sal had not uke'd for a number of them, so I would uke for Troy and then Sal would uke.  We would then switch to have Sal as tori.

At the end, we had Troy work on shihonage, dealing with a number of uke's reactions to a failed shomen-ate.  He worked in shomen-ate, mae-otoshi, and shihonage.  I did not give him the reaction that would have led to sumi-otoshi.

Aftermath:

None of note.

Aikido Thursday Night - 04/29/11

Aikido players:  Tim, and Troy.

Techniques:

I ran through the 5 defensive jo techniques.  I spent a good amount of time on what we call hi-otoshi (Irimi Mae Otoshi).  At the beginning, I was sending uke off at a 45 degree angle.  We changed that quickly to have me send him straight down his line of attack.  I was also entering at around uke's elbow, and that felt rough to all parties concerned.  We changed that to have me get as close to the armpit as possible and that improved things.  I also worked on my timing with uke's body rise and body fall.  At my height, unless I'm careful, I'm going to muck around with uke's posture.  I want to do as little to upset the apple cart as is possible, so I need to come in low.

Troy then ran through 6 and 13 of Ju Nana Han Kata with Trey as uke.  He did really well.
Aftermath:

None of note, but still keeping the toe, from last weekend, taped.

Artfire - Featured Shop -Sandra Healy

Sandra Healy is a member of the Artisans in Wood guild on artfire, and she does some amazing work.  She  creates small wild animal sculptures and magnets, hand carved and painted from her own original designs.

After the shapes are roughed out from basswood (American Linden), a hardwood tree native to the U.S., she then quietly carve the creatures using hand tools. Colored inks are applied to the sanded wood with an airbrush, and 3 coats of urethane brushed on to finish them.

I think these little creatures are just amazing.  Give them a look.  visit her shop and see if there's something you just have to own:

Lunching out : Pie Garden Restaurant

Friday  was able to get away from work around 11:30.  I normally would have gone straight to lunch, but K. was willing to join me for the meal, so I delayed until her lunch break.  I wanted to try the new restaurant in Pearland on 518 just outside of Friendswood : "The Pie Garden".  I'd seen some less than flattering reviews of the place, so I was a bit wary, but I should not have been.  I was quite impressed with the food.

I ordered the Chicken fried chicken and K. ordered the Chicken fried steak.  With both meals, green beans with onions, mashed red potatoes, and a serving of cream gravy were served.  I got a little concerned at the length of time it took to get my food, and the servers (we were visited by several as we were sitting at the counter) were impressed we'd gotten our food so quickly.  So, length of time to get your meal may be a minor issue.

I really enjoyed all parts of the meal.  The chicken was nicely done with a nice, crisp breading.  The green beans had just enough crispness and the onions added a nice flavor. The potatoes were good too, red potatoes with the skin on, mashed well.  The cream gravy, while a little thicker than I would like was great on the potatoes and the chicken.

K. had much the same to say about her CFS.  She really, really like the potatoes.  I was amazed at the difference in the breading between the two dishes, but the steak was nice and tender. (K. gave me a sample).

We chatted with our waitress about the pies, cakes and breads.  She said that they are now making everything in house, but they are working through a supply of some non-fruit pies that they initially outsourced.  She brought over a small sample of some of the French pastries and they were all quite nice.  I had an almond croissant, a chocolate croissant and a couple of other items.

We then ordered a slice of Banana cream pie and Apple pie.  The apple pie was for my father-in-law.  The banana cream pie was for me.  I enjoyed my slice pretty well, I think it could have had a few more bananas in it, but the flavor was quite good.  The crust I was not so great, it seemed very heavy on the tongue.  Maybe it was a bit under-cooked?

The total bill for the meal, with two iced teas, the two entrees and the two desserts was about $32.  So, ok price-wise.

I'm a little concerned about the layout of the place and the decor.  When you walk in the restaurant, you see the pie case in front of you.  The French pastry case is on the far side of the restaurant.  There's a lot of traffic to dodge between the entry and the pastries, so it is not a journey I'd make without having sampled some of the wares.  The decor, to me, is a little confused.  The exterior is sort of Mexican, with the tile roof.  The interior has no real theme: laminate countertops, and a very bland color scheme.  Don't go in expecting something like 59 Diner.

Overall, this is a restaurant that shows some promise.  I expect to go back.

Ukemi:

Set of 6 falls.  I only did right-sided as there's a painful spot on my right heel at the moment.  I'll start back on the full set next time I'm on the mat.

The Walk:

Once.

Releases:

I uke'd for Brad on the releases.  We spent a couple of hours working through the first 5 releases.

Techniques:

I also uke'd for Brad on the first 5 techniques of Ju Nana Hon Kata.  We were doing a dry run of his next demo.  We did not make it through all 10 of the techniques.  We also did it at one step distance instead of three step.

Aftermath:

More tired than I expected to be.

Aikido Friday Night - 4/15/11

Aikido players:  Tim, Sal, and Dan.

Ukemi:

Set of 6 falls.  I only did right-sided as there's a painful spot on my right heel at the moment.

The Walk:

Twice, as usual.

Releases:

I watched as Dan  and Sal worked on the releases.  We spent a good portion of the evening on this

Techniques:

I also uke'd for Sal on Hiki Taoshi.  This was the first time he'd seen the technique.  He did pretty well on it.  I, as usual, want to make certain folks get the armbar nicely, even though it is considered "gravy" in the overall scheme of things.

Aftermath:

None of note.

Volleyball, 1-2

Tuesday, I subbed in on the Co-Ed rec league.  We played the second and third game close, winning the second.  The first game was not a blowout, but not as close as the other two.

Volleyball, 0-3

Monday night, I played in the usual Coed Reverse 4's.  Once again, we lost all games, but played pretty well.  I'm still having trouble hitting 10's, but I'm getting a little better.  My serves weren't winning any points.

Artfire - Item of the week in my shop - Carbara style pen in Blue Maple Burl

My item of the week in my artfire shop is a Carbara style pen in Blue Maple Burl.  The hardware is a satin nickel finish, not too gaudy, not too plain.  This is a neat style of pen, with a twisting mechanism at the clip end of the assembly.  It is a good size for either a man's or a woman's hand and is 4 1/2 inches long. This has a single twist, retractable mechanism that uses a Parker refill.

Since it's my item of the week, contact me for 10% off.

Here are some pictures:

Artfire - Featured Shop - Mellyn's Garden Art

Mellyn's Garden Art is a member of the Texas Guild on artfire who creates a wide variety of jewelry and art for your garden.  She works in Stained Glass, Fused Glass, Mosaics, Wood and Metal to make these one-of-a-kind creations.  They're all going to have at least a touch of whimsy in them to make your garden just a little bit more welcoming.  Her inspiration comes from the beautiful area of Central Texas (between Waco and Austin) where the only neighbors are cows.

Take a look at some of her items:

Weekend update

Friday:

Dropped some junk off at the Spring Sparkle
AikidoDinner with K. at Durango's

Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 4/9/11

Aikido players:  Tim, Trey, Troy, Brad, and Dan.

Ukemi:  Set of 6 falls.  I only did right-sided as there's a painful spot on my right heel at the moment.

The Walk: Twice, as usual.

Releases:

I worked with Dan and Troy on the releases working in a round robin.  Actually the round robin stopped early, as Troy got called over elsewhere.  No damage to toes this week.

Techniques:

Brad and Troy were working on their stuff and I was among the crowd watching.  I made some comments to Troy on Oshi-taoshi and Ude-hineri.

Aftermath:

Painful, colorful middle toe on my left foot and very sore muscles.

Aikido Friday Night - 4/8/11

Aikido players:  Tim, Trey, Troy, Sal, Dan, Marvin, and Gayle.

Ukemi:  Set of 6 falls.  I only did right-sided as there's a painful spot on my right heel at the moment.

The Walk: Twice, as usual.

Releases:

I worked with Marvin on the releases and things went pretty well.  We managed to get through all 8 releases tonight.

Techniques:

I worked with Marvin on the strike-the-dummy drill.  That went well enough that we moved on to Shomen-ate.  For a first time on the technique, he did pretty well.

I also uke'd for Trey on some Owaza Ju Pon techniques: Kata Otoshi, Kubi Guruma, Shihonage and Ushiro Kubi Gatame

Aftermath:

Minor tweak of the back on the Kubi Guruma.

Aikido Thursday Night - 04/07/11

Aikido players:  Tim, Trey, and Troy.

Techniques:

First off, Trey ran through the 16 techniques of Koryu Dai San, most of them with Trey as uke.  I uke'd a couple of wrist-tweaking techniques to keep Troy's wrist safe.

Troy then ran through 1-14 of Ju Nana Han Kata with Trey as uke.  He did really well.  Tim wants to have Troy's next demo by the end of May.

I then ran through a couple of bokken take-away techniques.  A little rusty.
Aftermath: None of note, but still keeping the toe, from last weekend, taped.

Armadillocon Art Show is ready for space requests!

I'm running the Art Show at ArmadilloCon (this one is number 33) again this year.  I think this is my 8th year to run it.  I sent out emails and snail mail packets last week, and I'm posting the information here, along with Armadillocon's website, just in case I missed anyone.  I had several emails returned as having bad email addresses and I expect to have the same thing happen with the snail mail packets.

We plan to have an Art Supply Swap for those artists who will be attending in person. If you have excess supplies you no longer need, bring them along. If you find something in the swap area/box/thingy, it's free for the taking. Any leftover supplies will be donated to a local school or charity.
Those artists who do get panel space this year, I'd really like you to use my on-line tool for entering your artwork information. It also lets you print out control sheets and bid sheets. Last year, I entered all artists' information myself. It helped me catch a number of math errors, but I'd prefer not to have to enter it all myself. When you sign up, I'll send you an email with the link to the website.

Here are the pdfs with the information on the show.  Don't hesitate to drop me a line if you've got questions.

Artfire - Featured Shop - RF Colorful Creations

RF Colorful Creations is a member of the On Fire for Handmade Guild on artfire.  And the name of the studio is definitely truth in advertising: there is a lot of color in the creations in the shop.  She primarily works in polymer clay.  She also does some woodburning and then painting of the results.  Also, know that her lovebird, Sharley, supervises and inspects all items before they are deemed fit to be shipped out to customers.

Take a look at some of the amazing things in her shop:

Volleyball, 0-3, 0-3

Playing in a Reverse-4s co-ed league for the first time and trying to figure out the rules.  The first match was close in each game.  The second, not so much.  Still, some good exercise.

Artfire - Item of the week in my shop - Rebel Alliance Stained Glass

I was just minding my own business one day, out in the shop, probably working on some pens, when my mind wandered to the light side of the Force.  I was near my stained glass table and I thought about doing some Star Wars stained glass.  I went inside and did some searching for Star Wars images.  The two that popped out at me were the logos for the Galactic Empire and for the Rebel Alliance.  After much deliberation, the Rebel Alliance logo seemed to be the way to go: I could get away with many fewer pieces fo glass to cut.

I'm making it my item of the week on artfire.  Contact me for 10% off:

Here it is:

Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 4/2/11

Aikido players:  Tim, Trey, Troy, Dan, Marvin, and Gayle.

Ukemi:  Set of 6 falls.  I only did right-sided as there's a painful spot on my right heel at the moment.  Trey and I also helped Gayle with some introductory backfalls on our very cushy crash pad.

The Walk: Twice, as usual.

Releases: I worked with Gayle on the releases .  We worked on 1-4 on both sides.  She seemed fairly comfortable with the motions by the end our work on them.  If she's the same next week, we'll work on 5-8.

Techniques:

I worked with Dan on Gyakugamae-ate for quite a long time.  I probably took 50 falls on each side.  Very slow falls.  So, I would hang out in a crouch while he transitioned from the eye flash to the control of the head.  That gave my quadriceps quite a workout, and my arms, too.

Then I did some defensive Jo work with Trey: Gyakugamae Ate, Shomen Ate, Hishigi, Renraku Waza Hiji Hishigi, Irimi Mae Otoshi.  I think I did ok.

Trey then had me do a left-sided Kata Otoshi from Owaza Ju Pon.  I nailed it on the third try.  He also had me throw him with a guruma.  I chose Kubi Guruma and nailed it on the first try and, if I do say so myself, I think it was gorgeous, at least from my vantage point.

Aftermath:

Painful, colorful middle toe on my left foot and very sore muscles.

Aikido Friday Night - 4/1/11

Aikido players:  Tim, Trey, Sal, and Dan.

Ukemi:  Set of 6 falls.  I only did right-sided as there's a painful spot on my right heel at the moment.

The Walk: Twice, as usual.

Releases: I worked with Dan on the releases and things went pretty well.  On one of the releases one of my toes collided with his Achilles tendon and lost the battle.  It was quite painful.

Techniques:

I worked with Dan on Shomen-ate and Aigamae-ate and he did well.  I think those techniques are demonstration-ready.

Aftermath:

Painful, colorful middle toe on my left foot.  I could not sleep with a cover on as the weight of it caused too much pain.

Aikido Thursday Night - 3/31/11

Aikido players:  Tim, and Troy.

Techniques:

It was a night for me to work on things.  I worked on the 14 release techniques from Koryu Dai Yon No Kata and the 8 knife defenses from Koryu Dai San No Kata.  I'm pleased with how things went.  I need to work on remembering all of the knife techniques a little better.

Aftermath: None of note.
