Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 06/26/10

Aikidokas:  Dan and Brent.  No Tim, so I was in charge for the afternoon.
Ukemi: I spent a bunch of time with Brent on his rolls.  I was not able to help as much as I would like with the brace on my right hand.

The Walk: Twice, and then a bunch more.  We made it up to the seventh stone working on the hand motions and proper posture, trying to get Brent up to speed.

Releases: Introduced Brent to the first release

Techniques:

We  worked on Shomen-ate.  Dan and Brent both did some work on this.  I also brought out the strike the dummy drill to get them to both use their center when finishing the technique.  I think we need to start with this before actually introducing them to shomen-ate.

Aftermath: None of note.  The wrist in a brace is a bit of an annoyance.

Aikido Friday Night - 06/25/10

Aikidokas: Trey, Sal, Troy and Dan.  No Tim, so I was in charge for the evening.
Ukemi: I spent a bunch of time with Dan on his rolls.  We brought out the crash pad.  He wanted to start over on the right side.  I did some light warm-up on the left side.

The Walk: Twice.

Releases: Watched and helped Troy and Sal.

Techniques:

We had everyone work on Shomen-ate.  Trey served as uke for most of the evening.  I did some left side attacks when they weren't working with Trey to give them some work on the opposite side

Aftermath: None of note.  The wrist in a brace is a bit of an annoyance.

Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 06/19/10

Aikidokas: Trey, Brad, Troy, Dan, Brent.  No Tim, so I was in charge again.

Ukemi: No warm-up for me.  I didn't get there early enough to get in my rolls before class. I spent a bunch of time with Dan on his rolls.  We brought out the crash pad.

The Walk: Twice, and then about 16 times with Brent.  We went through all of the foot motions of the Walk.  We need to add the hands next time and see how much he remembers.

Releases: None for me.

Techniques:

I did the briefest of introductions to Shomen-ate for Brent.

Aftermath: None of note, other than the wrist in the brace.

Aikido Friday Night - 06/18/10

Trey, Dan, Sal, Troy

Aikidokas: Trey, Sal, Troy and Dan.  No Tim, so I was in charge for the evening.

Ukemi: I spent a bunch of time with Dan on his rolls.  We brought out the crash pad.  He wanted to start over on the right side.

The Walk: Twice.  And then quite a bit of work with Dan

Releases: With Dan.  We worked through the first four.  I attacked him with my left hand only, as I've got a sprained right wrist.

Techniques:

Dan and I ended the evening with some punch the dummy drills.

Aftermath: None of note, other than the wrist in a brace.

At the movies: Pirate Radio

Pirate Radio: 3
This is a very popular film at the local library.  It took me a while to find the copy on the shelves.

I'm not certain what I was expecting out of this movie, perhaps more conflict with the government?

It was really a bit about the life, just the surface really, of the DJs for a mobile radio station off the coast of England.  The parties, the broadcasts, the characters themselves.  And the search of the protagonist for his father.

I was, unfortunately, baking a cheesecake while watching the movie.  So, I might have missed a bit of the meat of the movie.  What I did see was a little undernourished, but showed promise.

I might watch it again if I can devote the time to it, just to see if it improves.

Volleyball, 0-3

Another rough night, but this one was medically related.  One of our players has been having seizures for a while, and she had one just as we were getting started thi week.  The EMTs took a while to get her situated and off the court.

We eventually managed to get one game in, but lost it by a small margin.  We had to forfeit the other two games due to time constraints.

Lunching out: Mackey's Bar and Grill

Mackey's has, apparently, moved from the far west end of Galveston Island up to Webster.  They've taken over the original spot for the late, lamented Valentino's Seafood.

I tried their Beefeater sandwich with fries and bread pudding.  The sandwich was pretty good, it tasted a bit salty.  I never really trust my taste buds on saltiness, so it might have been fine, but just struck me a little off.  The bread was good and everything was cooked nicely.  The fries were nicely cooked and of the battered variety.

The bread pudding was a decent example of its category.  A not terribly imaginative raisin with a, I think, Gran Marnier sauce.

Overall, it's worth another trip to try other items on the menu.  With the bread pudding, lunch set me back about $20.

Aikido Saturday Afternoon - 06/12/10

Aikidokas: Tim, Trey, Brad, and Dan.

Ukemi: Light warm-up for me.  I spent a bunch of time with Dan on his rolls.  We brought out the crash pad.  I made a slight change and gave him an aid on his rolls.  His left side improved dramatically, we're waiting for his right side to catch up.

The Walk: Twice.

Releases: With Brad.

Techniques:

I worked with Brad on #6 and #7 of Ju Nana.  He's quite improved.

At the end of the class I worked with Trey on 1, 2, and 4 of San Kata kneeling.  We skipped three for the moment, probably a while, as it's a kote-gaeshi.  And my wrist cant take that for a while.

Aftermath: At some point during the weekend, Trey threw me with a kote gaeshi that I should not have taken.  My wrist has been sore, off and on, for a couple of weeks.  When he threw me with that kote, I yelped.  the doc has determined that it's sprained and I've got drugs and a brace to help me through the next few weeks.  I'm betting that I'm left side only on that throw for a while.  And, with the brace on, I probably ought to limit my falls, overall.

Aikido Friday Night - 06/11/10

Aikidokas: Tim, Trey, Sal, and Dan.

Ukemi: No warm-up for me.  I didn't get there early enough to get in my rolls before class. I spent a bunch of time with Dan on his rolls.  We brought out the crash pad.

The Walk: Twice.

Releases: With Dan.  We worked through the first four.  He's picking these up pretty well.  We spent most of the evening on them.

Techniques:

Trey and I did some work on the knife defenses in San Kata.

Aftermath: None of note.

Volleyball, 0-3

Back to the normal habit.  We played Fandango and got absolutely thrashed in the first game.  We made a bid for the second game, but fell short.  I don't remember the the score of the third game.

At the Movies: Prince of Persia

Prince of Persia: 2

An okay vehicle for  Jake Gyllenhaal.  The story of a foundling brought up as royalty and second in line for the throne.  In the course of invading a kingdom, he acquires a magic dagger that lets him travel back in time.  He uses it to foil a plot by another relative to take over as king.

As a parkour movie it's too long.  As a game-derived movie, it's okay.

(overheard leaving the theater: "If I saw Jake's face on the screen one more time, I'd have to strip and throw myself at the screen")

Weekend update

Artfire: Spotlight: Positively Charming Things

This week's spotlight shop is Positively Charming Things

At the movies: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus: 3

If you don't like previous Monty Python cast movies, don't see this movie.  If you like Terry Gilliam movies, you know what to expect, and the movie delivers.

It was interesting how they used the death of Heath Ledger and incorporated it into the movie.

Bizarre, but fun.

At the movies: Iron Man 2

Iron Man 2: 3

The latest vehicle appropriate to Robert Downey, Jr.'s public persona.  There was plenty of action and plenty of new characters and a reasonable story line.

I was pleased with Tony Stark, War Machine, Nick Fury, and Pepper.  I wasn't too pleased withwhat they gave Scarlett, but it was ok.

Dining out: Bailey's American Grille

We ate here for my b-i-l's birthday.  We tried a wide variety of the food, none of it really impressed any of us.

The following was ordered:

Fried Green Tomatoes: pretty good
Pulled pork flat bread: not bad
Shrimp and Grits: don't remember
Gumbo: meh.
Prime Rib: ok
Salmon: did not get finished
Pork Chop: did not get finished
Southern  greens
Creamed spinach
Yukon Gratin
Apple Chorizo Cornbread pudding

For the prices paid, the ambiance was nice, but the food was not worth it.  It's not likely we'll be going back

Weekend update

Friday:

Saturday:

up at the crack of dawn to go blueberry picking
Blueberry picking - we ended up with around 30 pounds of berries

This was a special class.  It was a mini-seminar on the weapons portions of Koryu Dai San no Kata.  Jeff and Gail need to know it for their next demonstration and I think I need to know some of it for mine.  We did not have enough time to get through all of it, but we did get through a good portion.

We got through the Tanto and the defensive Bokken.  Mike then demonstrated the defensive Jo.

Trey and I worked together all of the afternoon.  We got a decent amount of the mat and had some decent explorations.  Trey's trying to give me as much time as tori as possible.

I also got some great instruction on the role of uke from Craig.  If I remember correctly, Craig was uke for Karl for a long time and was uke on some videos that Karl did.  In essence, Craig told me to be restrained, lose the theatrics.  Simple in words, but it'll take some thinking on my part to implement.

I did get a video of what was demonstrated and will work on getting it off the camera soon.

Aftermath: None of note.

Aikido Friday Night - 05/28/10

Aikidokas: Tim, Trey, Troy, and Dan.

Ukemi: Usual warm-up.  I spent a bunch of time with Dan on his rolls.  We brought out the crash pad.

The Walk: Twice.

Releases: With Troy.

Techniques:

We spent a lot of time on the releases and then some time with Troy on Aigamae-ate.  He's getting the hang of it.

At the end of the session, Trey and I did some quick reps on Aigamae-ate.  Rusty, but ok.

Aftermath: None of note.

Volleyball, 1-2

We won a game!!!  It was the third game, and I think they were being kind.  They changed their rotation from a 4-2 to middle front sets.  That reduced their number of kills.

I'll take it.

Lunching out: Taqueria NASA

A popular taqueria down near Seabrook.

I had the enchiladas verdes with rice, beans, and tea.  The enchiladas were some of the hottest I've ever had.  They were not inedibly hot, but they pushed the limits some.  I think it was the beans that had an off taste to them, maybe the rice.  Maybe my taste buds were singed by the green sauce, I don't know.  But, I did not enjoy the flavor of the side dishes.

Chips: ok.
Green salsa:none.
Red salsa: ok.
Enchiladas:  Hot!
Rice: nice texture and flavor
Beans: nice texture and off flavor
